Mixing & Mastering in Grand Rapids, Michigan
You've written the song. You've recorded the performances. You've built the production.
Now the goal is to make everything work together.
At Octave Works, I mix and master music with a focus on clarity, emotion, balance, and impact. The goal isn't simply to make a song louder or technically polished. It's to make sure the production you've created translates into a finished record that sounds the way it should and connects with the listener.
Mixing Music That Feels Like a Record
A mix brings all of the individual pieces of a production together.
Vocals, guitars, drums, bass, and everything else need to work together without competing for attention. I'll shape the balance, tone, dynamics, space, and overall energy of the song while keeping the original character of the production intact.
My approach isn't to make every song sound the same.
The mix should serve the song.
A heavy song may need aggressive drums and guitars that hit hard. A stripped-down song may need space and intimacy. A vocal-driven song may require the vocal to stay front and center without losing the emotion of the performance.
The goal is to make the important parts feel important.
What I Do in the Mix
Every song has different needs, but mixing can include:
- Vocal balance, EQ, compression, and effects
- Guitar tone and balance
- Bass clarity and impact
- Drum balance, punch, and dynamics
- Instrument separation
- EQ and tonal shaping
- Compression and dynamics
- Reverb and delay
- Stereo imaging and depth
- Automation and volume rides
- Overall balance and translation
I'll listen to the production as a whole rather than treating each track as an isolated problem.
Sometimes a vocal needs more processing. Sometimes the real problem is that the guitar is masking it. Sometimes the drums don't need to be louder—they need more space around them.
Mixing is about understanding how all of those decisions affect each other.
Mastering
Mastering is the final stage between your mix and the finished release.
I'll take the completed mix and make final adjustments to its overall tonal balance, dynamics, loudness, and consistency while preparing it for distribution.
Mastering can also help make sure your music translates across different listening environments—from headphones and car speakers to larger playback systems.
For projects with multiple songs, mastering can also help create a more consistent listening experience from track to track.
Remote Mixing & Mastering
You don't have to be in Grand Rapids to work with Octave Works.
Mixing and mastering can be handled remotely, making it possible to work together regardless of where you're located.
