Music Production, Beat Making, and Songwriting in Grand Rapids, Michigan
A great song starts with an idea. Music production is where we figure out how to turn that idea into a finished record.
At Octave Works, I work one-on-one with artists to develop their songs, shape their sound, and make the creative decisions that bring the music to life. You might come in with a finished song and a clear vision, or you might have a rough demo and a general idea of where you want to take it.
My job is to help figure out what the song needs—and then make it happen.
What I Do as a Producer
Production can mean something different for every artist and every song. My role is to listen to what you're trying to create and help make the decisions that get it there.
That can include:
- Song arrangement and development
- Instrumentation and additional performances
- Vocal production
- Pre-production
- Sound and tone selection
- Performance direction
- Songwriting and creative collaboration
- Recording additional parts
Sometimes the biggest improvement is adding something new. Sometimes it's changing the arrangement. Sometimes it's taking something away.
The goal isn't to produce the song a certain way. It's to figure out what makes that particular song work.
Song Arrangement & Development
A strong production starts with a strong song.
I'll work with you to evaluate the structure, pacing, dynamics, and overall direction of your song. That might mean developing a chorus, changing the arrangement, building a more effective intro, or figuring out how to make a particular section hit harder.
The goal is to make sure the production supports the song rather than getting in its way.
Instrumentation & Vocal Production
Sometimes a song already has everything it needs. Other times, it needs another guitar part, a different instrument, additional harmonies, or a completely different approach.
As a musician and songwriter, I can contribute instrumentation and musical ideas when they're right for the project.
I'll also work directly with vocalists on performance, phrasing, harmonies, delivery, and finding the approach that best serves the song.
Production isn't just about what gets recorded. It's about getting the right performance out of the artist.
A Musician's Perspective
I've been around music since I was a kid, and I've spent years writing, performing, recording, producing, and working on my own music.
That experience influences the way I approach production.
I don't look at a song only as an engineer looking at tracks on a screen. I'm listening to the songwriting, the performance, the arrangement, and the emotion behind the idea.
The technical side matters. But great production starts with knowing what the music is supposed to make someone feel.
